New Jersey clinicals for Drexel nursing students

Pediatric students get extra encouragement here. Drexel's pediatric NP pages call New Jersey licensure, with Pennsylvania and Delaware, “highly recommended” because it widens the pool of preceptors and sites.

AANP puts New Jersey in its reduced-practice group: before ordering medications or devices, an NP there needs joint protocols with a collaborating physician. Most NPs you approach will have that physician in the background.

Drexel's criteria don't turn on that arrangement. It checks the role (NP, certified nurse midwife, or physician in a specialty Drexel approves), current board certification, a license valid where the preceptor practices and at least twelve months in practice, so the collaborating physician may qualify as well. Nothing in the New Jersey Board of Nursing rules reviewed for this page asks a school based elsewhere for approval or advance notice when its students rotate here. N.J.A.C. 13:37-1.10 requires a written agreement between a program and each clinical agency, and its subsection (c) covers New Jersey programs sending students out of state, not the reverse. The Board's own site couldn't be opened, so its posted guidance wasn't reviewed.

One rule is worth raising with a site. N.J.A.C. 13:37-1.10A, in force since January 2022, limits a preceptor to one student at a time. It sits among the rules for Board-accredited pre-licensure programs, so whether it reaches graduate NP students from a Pennsylvania school is unclear.

New Jersey joined the Nurse Licensure Compact on November 15, 2021. If you live in New Jersey and your license is multistate, Drexel's Clinical Compliance certification page treats it as sufficient for clinicals across compact states, Pennsylvania among them. Drexel's NP program pages want a Pennsylvania RN license in hand before clinicals, so confirm which reading Clinical Compliance applies to you; the two are compared on the Pennsylvania RN license page.

Individual sites can set their own bar. Virtua's 2015 prerequisites sheet asks RN students for a current New Jersey RN license, a line that may have changed since the state joined the compact. If you intend to practice in New Jersey after graduating, its APN certification rules call for a New Jersey or multistate RN license and at least 39 hours of pharmacology.

New Jersey straddles two big metros: North Jersey's roughly 7.1 million residents count toward greater New York, and about 1.4 million South Jersey residents toward greater Philadelphia, with Trenton-Princeton and Atlantic City between them. Systems students approach include Virtua and Cooper University Health Care in Camden County, Capital Health near Trenton, AtlantiCare, RWJBarnabas Health, Hackensack Meridian Health and Atlantic Health System. Most want an active agreement with the school first.

Virtua's individual request form lists Drexel among its affiliate schools, and Cooper's March 2026 partnership with Drexel targets accelerated BSN students without naming NP students. The system-by-system detail lives on New Jersey and Delaware clinical sites.
