Delaware clinicals for Drexel nurse practitioner students

Delaware appears on none of Drexel's exclusion lists, so whether you're aiming for an NP track, an NP certificate, the DNP or the RN-to-BSN, you can apply from home. AGPCNP certificate students must log their 640 hours in their state of residence or in Pennsylvania, which for a Delawarean means Delaware sites or a drive north.

Drexel singles out pediatric students here, rating Delaware licensure, along with Pennsylvania and New Jersey, as “highly recommended” for preceptor and site selection.

Delaware's nursing education rules, 24 Del. Admin. Code 1900, require a school from another state that wants a Delaware clinical facility to tell the Board before the facility is used. With the notice go proof of the school's approval or national accreditation, its signed agreements with every agency it will use, its preceptor standards, the names of faculty and preceptors and where each works, and a copy of each one's current Delaware or multistate license. The rules also have the Board approve facilities, from forms the school submits, before students are assigned.

The filing is Drexel's, not yours, and the rules carve out no exception for graduate programs. Your part is to start early and ask CNHP Clinical Compliance (dhcompliance@drexel.edu) whether Drexel's notice already covers the site and preceptor you have in mind.

AANP lists Delaware as full practice, so many NPs there practice without a physician agreement. Delaware enacted the APRN Compact on August 4, 2021, but that compact stays dormant until seven states adopt it, and five had by 2026.

Delaware's rules add their own test: each preceptor must hold a license or privileges to practice at a level no lower than the one the student is training for, and the rule is worded around nurses. Drexel accepts physicians in approved specialties, so if your Delaware preceptor is a physician, ask Clinical Compliance how the Board notice treats that. Delaware entered the Nurse Licensure Compact on January 19, 2018. Any multistate RN license therefore works here, and Drexel wants a license that covers each state where you do clinical hours. Delaware's population clusters in three places: New Castle County's share of the Philadelphia metro, about 588,000 people; the Dover area, about 195,000; and the Seaford area downstate, about 277,000. Systems students approach include ChristianaCare in Wilmington and Newark, Bayhealth in Dover and Milford, Beebe Healthcare in Lewes, Nemours and TidalHealth Nanticoke in Seaford.

ChristianaCare puts Drexel on its Graduate Clinical Partnerships list, though it isn't adding new agreements and asks graduate students to confirm the school's agreement before calling. Bayhealth says NP students find their own preceptors, and ChristianaCare, Bayhealth and Beebe all onboard students through Clinician Nexus. The detail is on New Jersey and Delaware clinical sites.
