Drexel NP clinicals in Florida

Florida is missing from all of Drexel's exclusion lists, so a Florida address qualifies for each program here.

Alabama, across the Panhandle's western edge, is shut to Drexel NP, DNP and RN-to-BSN applicants alike, so a move west from Pensacola needs an advisor conversation first. Georgia, to the north, is open.

Florida's approval statute, s. 464.019, F.S., applies when an institution wants to offer prelicensure nursing education inside Florida, and the Board frames its approval work the same way. Nothing turned up in Florida law that makes an APRN, graduate or RN-to-BSN program based elsewhere seek the Board's approval, or even tell the Board, before its students train here.

In practice, then, Drexel's own process is the gate for a Florida site: the site signs Drexel's affiliation agreement, Clinical Compliance clears your file, and your preceptor validates hours in E*Value once you start. The steps and their order are on the clinical placement process.

AANP lists Florida as restricted. Unless an exemption applies, some Florida NPs keep a physician protocol for their entire careers. So when you approach a protocol-bound NP, the physician on that protocol is a natural second candidate. On Drexel's side, the preceptor can be an NP, a nurse midwife or a physician whose specialty Drexel approves, with board certification, a Florida license and at least a year of practice. Florida has issued multistate licenses since January 2018. Clinical Compliance's rule treats that home-state compact license as enough, while the NP program pages expect a Pennsylvania license before your first rotation; settle which applies early with the Pennsylvania RN license guide.

Florida's TEACH program (Training, Education, and Clinicals in Health), set up under s. 409.91256, F.S., is administered by the state's Agency for Health Care Administration and pays facilities, not individual preceptors. Sites that qualify include FQHCs, CCBHCs, rural health clinics, community mental health centers and certain shortage-area nonprofits. They're paid per clinical hour for primary care APRN students and for nursing students, up to an annual cap per facility that rises when the site also runs a residency. The preceptor needs a Florida license, funding hinges on appropriations, and the section is repealed July 1, 2034.

Nothing in the statute summary settles whether a Pennsylvania school's student counts toward those hours, so the site should confirm with the Agency. For Drexel FNP and AGPCNP students, the clinic types on TEACH's list are worth a close look, because hosting you may help their budget.

The biggest metro runs from Miami through Fort Lauderdale to West Palm Beach; Tampa Bay, Orlando and Jacksonville come next. UF Health, BayCare Health System, HCA Florida Healthcare, Baptist Health South Florida and AdventHealth, a Florida-headquartered system operating in several states, are among the biggest employers.
