Alabama residents and Drexel nursing programs

Each group of Drexel's online nursing programs has its own list of home states it can't enroll from at this time, and Alabama appears on three. The rule is Drexel's and follows where you live.

Alabama asks more of outside programs than most states. Board rule 610-X-3-.09 has any advanced practice program headquartered elsewhere send a letter of intent, with its approval paperwork, at least 15 days before the first Alabama clinical learning experience, and pay an annual out-of-state program fee. Students can't begin clinicals in Alabama until the Board has both.

The filing names you and your license number, your clinical supervisor and that person's license number, and the facility, and it carries a statement from the site's Director of Nursing or CNO. The school prepares it, so an Alabama site starts as a conversation with your program.

Post-licensure students, MSN and DNP included, need one of two licenses for clinical work in Alabama: a multistate license from any compact state, or an Alabama RN license with no encumbrance. Alabama joined the compact on January 1, 2020.

AANP classes Alabama as reduced practice. At least one part of an NP's work runs under a state-regulated physician collaboration, with nursing and medical boards sharing oversight. Drexel's preceptor list covers both halves of that partnership: it accepts NPs and certified nurse midwives, and physicians whose specialty Drexel approves, provided each holds current board certification and has practiced for a year.

APTIP, Alabama's income tax credit for unpaid preceptors teaching in rural, medically underserved communities, is run through the Alabama Statewide AHEC Program Office. Only rotations for schools physically based in Alabama qualify, so hosting a student from a Pennsylvania school earns nothing under it. Revenue officials show it running from the 2024 tax year to September 29, 2031.

In Birmingham there's UAB Medicine; in Mobile, USA Health alongside Infirmary Health; Montgomery has Baptist Health, and Huntsville its own hospital system. None is a Drexel site.

Studying NP at Drexel from an admitted state, with a job or family pulling you to Alabama? Talk to Drexel before you sign a lease.
