Vermont clinicals for Drexel NP students

Vermont doesn't appear on any of Drexel's excluded-state lists, so a Vermonter can study for an NP master's or certificate, the DNP or a BSN completion degree at Drexel without moving.

Vermont's Board answers the preceptor question directly in its FAQ. For an APRN student it accepts either an APRN or a physician, provided their Vermont license is active and in good standing, they have practiced in the student's own role and population focus, and they work hand in hand with the school's faculty. The same FAQ rules out PAs for APRN students.

Drexel's side of the match asks for one of three clinician types, an NP, a CNM, or a doctor practicing a specialty on Drexel's approved list, holding board certification after at least a year in practice. Put the two together and the safe Vermont preceptor for an FNP student is a board-certified family NP or family physician, for PMHNP a psychiatric NP or psychiatrist, and so on. Drexel's preceptor requirements cover the paperwork.

AANP counts Vermont as full practice, with an early-career exception. Until an NP has logged 24 months and 2,400 practice hours, the state expects a collaborating agreement with a physician or APRN it licenses. Drexel's one-year floor falls inside that window, so a second-year NP preceptor may still have a collaborator in the background.

Vermont has tried a preceptor incentive once. Act 183 of 2022 set aside single-year money in fiscal 2023 for Nurse Preceptor Incentive Grants to nurses on critical access hospital staffs, restricted to students from Vermont's own schools, and nothing shows it running since. Leave it out of your pitch to a Drexel preceptor.

Vermont has issued multistate licenses since February 1, 2022, and under Vermont Rule 4.1 a nurse holding another compact state's multistate license needs no Vermont license unless they move their primary residence here. At Drexel, a Vermont multistate license satisfies the certifications page by itself, but the NP program pages still name a Pennsylvania license as a prerequisite for clinicals. New York is the constraint. Drexel lets no NP student log clinical hours there, so any site on the New York side of the line is out. New Hampshire, a compact state, is your cross-border option.

The largest system is University of Vermont Health, whose hospitals include UVM Medical Center, Porter Medical Center and Central Vermont Medical Center. Further south, students ask at Rutland Regional Medical Center and at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center, which belongs to the New Hampshire-based Dartmouth Health. Burlington-South Burlington, Rutland and the Lebanon-Claremont area on the New Hampshire line are the natural starting points. These are places students ask, not Drexel partners.
