Doing your Drexel NP clinicals in Texas

Drexel's residency restrictions skip Texas entirely. Here is Drexel Online's State Regulations page read for a Texas address.

Louisiana, just across the Sabine, is one of the eleven states Drexel can't enroll NP students from. If work or family could pull you there mid-program, read moving during clinicals first.

Texas does require its Board's approval before a school based elsewhere runs clinical learning in the state, and SARA membership is no exemption. Guideline 3.1.3, revised May 1, 2026, and the matching rules in chapters 214 and 215 of Title 22 aim that step at vocational and RN programs that prepare people for a first license, from diplomas to entry-level master's degrees. RN-to-BSN completion and graduate APRN programs are left out, and every Drexel program a Texan would take falls in that group.

Chapter 219, the Board's APRN education standard, applies formally only to programs seeking Texas approval. It still describes the Texas view of NP teaching: an APRN or other licensed clinician able to supervise, with a written agreement tying school, preceptor and agency together. Drexel's equivalent is its clinical affiliation agreement.

AANP rates Texas as restricted. An NP here works under a physician's delegation, signs protocols that stay in force for as long as they practice, and faces Schedule II limits tied to the setting. So nearly every NP you approach has a delegating physician down the hall, and that physician is a second candidate at the same address.

Drexel's approved preceptor types are nurse practitioners, certified nurse midwives and physicians in specialties it signs off on; each needs a Texas license, current board certification and twelve months or more of practice. Physician assistants run many Texas clinics but aren't on Drexel's list, so a PA-heavy practice works only when an NP or physician there does the teaching. Drexel gives two answers on licensing. Clinical Compliance treats a compact license from your home state as a substitute for Pennsylvania's; the NP program pages want Pennsylvania licensure in hand before clinicals begin. A Texas compact license suits the compliance route and also reaches Pennsylvania, a full compact member since July 2025. The Pennsylvania RN license guide sets both readings side by side.

The tuition break Texas gives preceptors, under Education Code section 54.356, rewards Texas-resident RNs who teach in public programs leading to a first RN license. An NP teaching a Drexel graduate student falls outside it, and the state's other preceptor money goes to medical students or to Texas schools. So the case you make to a Texas clinician rests on Drexel's recognition: a Clinical Faculty title, a termly certificate listing verified hours, and reduced Drexel CE.

Most Texans live in four metros: Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth, San Antonio and Austin. Large employers of NPs and physicians include Houston Methodist and University Health in San Antonio, along with Baylor Scott & White, UT Southwestern and Texas Health Resources.
