Oklahoma clinicals for Drexel NP students

Oklahoma isn't named on any of Drexel's exclusion lists, so the whole online nursing catalog is available to you.

Three neighbors are a different story. Kansas, Missouri and Colorado residents are barred from Drexel's NP programs, and Missouri and Colorado are closed to its DNP too; Kansans can still take the DNP. If a move north or west is possible, read Kansas and moving during clinicals first.

The Board's rule on programs from other states, OAC 485:10-5-12, has two halves. Schools preparing people for a first license must ask the Board's leave in advance, backed by a signed clinical contract and Oklahoma-licensed supervising faculty. RNs enrolled in an APRN program elsewhere skip that step, but subsection (c) lets them train here only when all three of these are true:

• Your license. The rule wants you licensed, without encumbrance, to work as an RN in Oklahoma. Oklahoma joined the compact's multistate system in January 2018, and its Board treats multistate holders from other compact states as covered; confirm with Drexel that yours counts.
• Drexel's faculty. The Drexel faculty member overseeing your clinical work must hold a clean Oklahoma license at the level taught or higher. Only Drexel can answer this one, so raise it with your track director before your first Oklahoma course.
• The program. Drexel's APRN program meets the Oklahoma Board's education requirements for APRNs.

The faculty point is easy to miss; NUPR 520, where Drexel introduces its contracting and compliance steps, is a natural place to ask.

AANP classes Oklahoma as restricted. An Oklahoma NP needs a written statement showing 6,240 hours of physician supervision before prescribing independently, and Schedule II drugs are off limits. NPs still inside that supervised stretch can precept if they clear Drexel's bar: board certification, a year of practice and an Oklahoma license.

Drexel also takes CNMs and physicians in approved specialties, and the physician overseeing an NP's prescribing is an obvious second ask. PAs aren't on Drexel's list. See who can precept a Drexel student.

Oklahoma's HB 3351 (2024) set up an income tax credit for primary care clinicians holding Oklahoma licenses (physicians, PAs and APRNs) who teach students in the state, APRN students among them. Each rotation is 160 aggregate hours, the cap is ten a year, and awards follow the order applications arrive while funds last. The Workforce Training Commission runs it and is accepting 2026 applications; the credit isn't refundable, carries forward five years and runs through tax year 2035.

The fit with Drexel is neat: NURS 534 to NURS 537, the first four FNP courses, are 160 hours apiece, so one course equals one rotation. Nothing in the Commission's summary limits the credit to Oklahoma schools, yet a preceptor should check eligibility for an out-of-state student with the Commission before relying on it.

Oklahoma City and Tulsa are home to most Oklahomans, with Lawton and Enid far smaller. Big clinical employers include INTEGRIS Health, OU Health (the University of Oklahoma's academic system), SSM Health St. Anthony, Hillcrest HealthCare System and Saint Francis Health System. Away from the two large metros, practices thin out and drives lengthen, which is why Drexel says travel may be part of the plan.
