Drexel clinicals in South Carolina

No Drexel exclusion list mentions South Carolina, and neither of its neighbors, North Carolina and Georgia, is closed either.

Two metros cross the state line: Charlotte reaches into South Carolina from the north, and Augusta from Georgia. That widens the map for MSN students living near either border, though AGPCNP certificate students stay in-state or in Pennsylvania.

The Board of Nursing, which sits within South Carolina's Labor, Licensing and Regulation agency, applies S.C. Code Regs. 91-6 to nursing programs whose parent institution is in another state and whose South Carolina clinicals lead toward initial licensure. Those programs need Board approval first, full approval at home, a supervising faculty member on site and on shift who holds a South Carolina or compact license, a signed clinical contract, and precepting done the South Carolina way. Once approved, they must report any change in compliance within 15 days.

The regulation is silent on RN-to-BSN completion and on APRN education. For a Drexel student, the gates that count are Drexel's own: the site's clinical affiliation agreement, your compliance clearance and your preceptor's approval.

AANP calls South Carolina restricted. NPs perform delegated acts under a practice agreement with a physician, and their controlled-substance supplies are capped. That agreement means a physician is always attached to the NP you approach, and both can precept a Drexel student if they clear Drexel's bar, which asks for board certification, a South Carolina license, a year of practice and, for physicians, a specialty Drexel approves. South Carolina entered the compact in January 2018. Under Clinical Compliance's rule, your South Carolina multistate license can replace a Pennsylvania one, though the program pages still call for Pennsylvania; the license guide sets out both.

Section 12-6-3800 of the state code, created by 2019 Act No. 45 and amended by 2024 Act No. 217, offers an income tax credit per qualifying rotation up to a yearly cap, plus a deduction for up to six further rotations. It's for physicians, APRNs and PAs who precept without pay, handle two or more rotations a year, and are enrolled Medicaid providers whose Medicaid and Medicare patients together number 100 or more. After the 2024 amendment the credit lasts through tax year 2029 and is repealed January 1, 2030; SCDOR's Revenue Ruling #20-2 still names January 1, 2026.

Drexel's preceptor benefits are recognition, not pay, so the unpaid condition is met. The sources reviewed don't say whether a rotation for a Pennsylvania school's student qualifies, so a preceptor should confirm with a tax adviser or the Department of Revenue.

Greenville-Anderson-Greer is the largest metro, with Charleston-North Charleston and Columbia close behind and a slice of greater Charlotte in the north.
