Drexel NP clinicals in Mississippi

Mississippi doesn't appear on any Drexel exclusion list.

Alabama to the east and Louisiana to the west and south are both closed to Drexel NP and DNP applicants, and Alabama to the RN-to-BSN as well. A move across either line mid-program needs a talk with your advisor first; moving during clinicals covers the order.

Oversight of nursing education in Mississippi is split in two. Practical nursing programs answer to the Board of Nursing; RN degree programs are measured against standards set by the state's Institutions of Higher Learning board, the IHL. In IHL's view, a school headquartered elsewhere, undergraduate or graduate, has to live up to those Mississippi standards once it runs clinicals here.

IHL also regards a practicum held in Mississippi as putting the school physically in the state. So IHL Nursing Education reviews the program, a process it says may run three months; the August 2024 procedures manual wants programs run from outside Mississippi to ask for that review four or more months ahead. SARA participation, or separate distance-education authorization, is a further condition; Drexel has held SARA status since December 2016, which settles that part but not the review.

Under IHL standards, anyone taking an APRN clinical course must hold a clean, unencumbered RN license that is good in the state hosting the clinicals, and visiting programs follow the same standard. Mississippi is a compact state, and its Board's position is that a nurse residing in a compact state and in good standing may work across the other compact states, with no employer insisting on a separate license. Drexel's compliance page accepts that multistate license, while its program pages ask for Pennsylvania; Drexel's license guide compares the two.

AANP rates Mississippi reduced: an NP must work within a collaboration the Board approves, partnered with a physician or dentist licensed in Mississippi. Dentists aren't on Drexel's preceptor list, so the useful pairing is NP and physician. Both can precept if board certified and a year into practice, with the physician in a specialty Drexel approves.
