Your Drexel clinical timeline: when to start each step

Your first clinical course is the date everything else serves. In Drexel's quarter sample plans for the NP MSN tracks, it falls in Summer of year two, after the MSN core, advanced pathophysiology, pharmacology, health assessment, professional issues and your track pharmacology course, each passed with at least a B. Clinical courses then run one per quarter. The FNP with Emergency Specialization plan differs, starting clinicals in Winter of year two.

Find your first clinical course in your own plan of study, then match it to the dates below. 2026–27 is Drexel's last quarter-based year before it moves to semesters.

Drexel sets no placement deadline, so the schedule below is our planning guide, built from its sample plans and stated lead times. Your compliance coordinator's dates override it wherever they differ.

1. Three quarters outUsually your NUPR 520 quarter. Start the preceptor search, settle your RN license question, open CastleBranch and begin any Hepatitis B doses or titers.
2. Two quarters outAim to have a preceptor confirmed and the site's contract started with Clinical Compliance. An older non-NP Drexel handbook put contracts at 3 to 8 weeks.
3. One quarter outFinish compliance items by your coordinator's dates: background checks, drug screen, immunizations, BLS and any ACLS or PALS, training modules and health insurance.
4. Week oneMany tracks open the first clinical course with an On-Campus Intensive during the first week of the summer quarter. Hours with your preceptor run inside the same quarter.

A few items take far longer than the rest, and they decide whether the countdown holds. Drexel warns that finishing the Hepatitis B series may take seven months, and the requirement is three doses plus a positive surface-antibody titer. Titers for measles, mumps, rubella and varicella must also come back positive, so check them early in case you need more doses.

Background checks repeat yearly, and Drexel wants a new FBI fingerprint check for your clinicals even if you were fingerprinted before. Drexel says the fingerprint results are mailed to you for upload, and Pennsylvania's human services department puts mailed FBI results at 7 to 10 business days for its own program. The flu form is due by October 1 each year, the TB test must fall within 12 months, and comprehensive health insurance has to be in place at the start of the clinical term. If your preceptor works in a large system, its deadlines can arrive before Drexel's. CHOP accepts graduate requests from schools only, with cutoffs of March 1 for summer rotations, May 1 for fall and October 1 for spring. Penn State Health's cutoffs are August 31 for January to April rotations, December 31 for May to July and March 31 for August to December. WellSpan wants applications anywhere from eight weeks to six months early and notes that applying does not secure a spot.

The 2027 calendar change can shift when your rotations land. Continuing quarter students with a clinical course in Summer 2027 will find that term squeezed to seven weeks, from June 21 to August 7, while the quarter sample plans schedule 160-hour first clinical courses and week-one On-Campus Intensives in summer. Drexel has not published how those hours fit into seven weeks.

Students admitted for Fall 2027 or later start on semesters, where the 2027–28 catalog gives new course numbers (NURS 7600 opens the FNP sequence, NURS 7500 the AGACNP one) but no per-course clinical hours. Drexel's advisors are mapping each continuing student's path across the change. If your first clinical quarter is close and you have no preceptor, triage. Confirm your compliance items are moving, then aim your search at options likely to move fast: sites that already hold a Drexel agreement, which Clinical Compliance can confirm, and clinicians who have precepted before. Tell your track director where you stand early; an honest update now opens more options than a surprise in week one.

Graduates say the same about timing. One Drexel FNP alumna, interviewed on a school-directory site, called the search "a full-time job" and advised lining up sites as soon as you can, even a year out.
