Oregon residents at Drexel: the DNP is open, the NP tracks are not

Oregon is one of 11 states whose residents Drexel “is currently unable to admit” to NP study, which covers all nine MSN NP tracks and every post-master's NP certificate. The DNP and RN-to-BSN use shorter lists without Oregon.

What counts is your home address, not the state on your license. Drexel revises its State Regulations page, so reread your row the month you apply and send unusual cases to sara@drexel.edu, its state authorization mailbox. Every program's list is on our state authorization guide.

The Oregon State Board of Nursing leaves out-of-state APRN programs largely alone. Its APRN FAQ asks whether those schools need OSBN approval to place students in Oregon, and the printed answer is “No.” The older rule requiring prior authorization for NP students from non-Oregon graduate schools was repealed effective July 1, 2021.

OSBN's advance-notice form targets PN and RN pre-licensure schools; advanced practice programs, and programs like the RN-to-BSN or DNP that lead to no new license, sit expressly outside it. Faculty teaching in Oregon need an Oregon license. Drexel publishes no reason for keeping Oregon on its NP list, so the list itself is the page to watch.

The post-master's DNP pairs you with a “doctorate-prepared Practicum Mentor,” inside or outside your practice setting, though Drexel strongly recommends experience beyond your current job. The degree needs at least 1,000 post-baccalaureate precepted hours; the quarter catalog has you complete 480 or 600 in the program, depending on hours you bring, and the 2027–28 semester catalog uses different thresholds, so confirm yours. The RN-to-BSN asks for 36 planned clinical practice hours over NURS 342 (24), NURS 347 (8) and NURS 348 (4). Drexel doesn't say who arranges them, so ask your advisor in the first term.

Oregon has never joined the Nurse Licensure Compact and has no bill pending, so your Oregon license is single-state. Drexel wants graduate students licensed in each state where they log hours, which matters if a mentor over the Columbia in Washington looks convenient.

Most options sit in the Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro metro, then Salem, Eugene-Springfield and Bend. Large systems include Oregon Health & Science University, Legacy Health, Providence Oregon, Samaritan Health Services and Kaiser Permanente Northwest, each with its own student process. No Oregon preceptor incentive turned up in our research.

Enrolled in a Drexel NP track elsewhere, with a move to Oregon coming? Raise it first. Drexel's compliance pages warn that relocating “may affect the student's ability to complete clinical requirements,” and Oregon's spot on the NP list makes that concrete.
