Drexel WHNP clinical courses: NURS 690 to NURS 693

Each WHNP clinical course carries 5.0 quarter credits and a 160-hour practicum that runs alongside the online coursework. The quarter course descriptions state the 160 hours outright, so the 640-hour total is Drexel's own figure, not an estimate. Post-master's WHNP certificate students take the same four courses.

Spread evenly, 160 hours across a 10-week quarter comes to about 16 hours a week. Your preceptor's clinic days decide the real pattern, so agree on it before the quarter opens. Every other track's totals sit on Drexel clinical hours by track.

The titles tell you which practice fits. NURS 690 and NURS 691 center on gynecology and gender-related care, so an outpatient women's health or gynecology practice suits them. The catalog describes the NURS 690 practicum as clinical time in women's health.

The second half turns to pregnancy. The catalog describes NURS 692 hours as women's health low-risk obstetrical care and NURS 693 hours as time in high-risk obstetrics. A practice that sees mostly routine prenatal visits may carry you through NURS 692 yet fall short of the caseload NURS 693 expects, so line up the fourth course early.

One workable pattern is a gynecology preceptor for the first two courses and an obstetric practice for the last two. Drexel publishes no rule on how many preceptors you may use across a sequence, so check any multi-course plan with your track director before a site commits to a full year.

Drexel applies one preceptor rule across its NP tracks. Your preceptor must be a nurse practitioner, a certified nurse midwife or a physician in an approved specialty; hold the license and certification their state requires; be currently board certified; and have practiced for at least a year. In women's health that points to certified WHNPs, CNMs and obstetrician-gynecologists. Confirm with your track director that a physician's specialty is on Drexel's approved list.

Physician assistants are missing from Drexel's list, and Pennsylvania's § 21.373 omits them too, so build your plan around an NP, CNM or physician. WHNP adds one course to the standard NP prerequisite list. Before NURS 690 you need the MSN core (NURS 500, NURS 502, NURS 544, RSCH 503, RSCH 504), NURS 548, NURS 549, NURS 550 and NURS 664, each at a B or better, plus NURS 680 Primary Care for Women's Health and the track pharmacology course, NURS 682.

Sample plans put NUPR 520 Nurse Practitioner Clinical Orientation Seminar in Fall of year 2, about three quarters before NURS 690. The seminar introduces the clinical contracting and clinical compliance processes, which makes it the natural point to have a preceptor in view. See NUPR 520 clinical orientation.

Compliance runs alongside: CastleBranch background checks, a urine drug screen, immunizations with positive titers and American Heart Association BLS. Drexel warns that the Hepatitis B vaccine series may need as long as seven months.

The quarter catalog gives WHNP two intensives: five days in week one of summer at the start of NURS 690, and two days in week three of spring during NURS 693. Drexel notes that dates are subject to change, so book travel only once your cohort's dates are confirmed. The five-day block ties with the PNP acute care and dual intensive in NURS 642 as the longest in Drexel's NP catalog.

Both fall inside clinical quarters, so give your preceptor the dates when you settle a schedule. If OCI days do not count toward the 160 hours, the practicum has fewer weeks to fill; ask your course faculty how Drexel counts them. From Fall 2027 Drexel runs semesters, and the 2027–28 catalog renumbers the WHNP clinical courses as NURS 7620, NURS 7621, NURS 7622 and NURS 7623, at 5.0 semester credits each. The semester catalog does not publish their clinical hours, so treat 160 per course as a quarter-catalog figure only. Drexel's last quarter-system summer, June 21 to August 7, 2027, is cut to seven weeks as a transition term. Quarter sample plans put NURS 690 and its week-one OCI in summer, and Drexel has not explained how a 160-hour course fits the shorter term.
