Drexel's Gap Analysis for NPs adding a certificate

Drexel mentions the Gap Analysis on its certificate pages as a route for board-certified NPs adding a specialty: it can mean fewer courses and fewer clinical hours than the full certificate. Think of it as Drexel's way of setting your personal plan before you start, rather than after.

The 2027–28 catalog adds the only process detail Drexel publishes: “The Gap Analysis is not mandatory for acceptance,” and it “is performed and paid in full at the time of application.” So the decision comes with your application, not later in the program.

Drexel's public pages don't say who performs it, which documents it reviews, or how the result reaches you. Ask the admissions team for those details before you submit, and ask for the result in a form you can keep, since it shapes every clinical request you'll make.

The AGACNP certificate page is where Drexel gets specific, with two paths set side by side:

Whichever path applies, AGACNP's own pharmacology course has to be completed at Drexel ahead of the first clinical rotation. Read “up to 500” as a ceiling the analysis works within, not a set figure.

That page also describes the certificate as “29 credits” taking “one year of part-time study.” The catalog disagrees, showing a range of 34.0 to 39.0 quarter credits and a two-year plan, and it prints NURS 580 as “0.0,5.0” credits. Whether the smaller numbers describe a reduced plan isn't stated. Ask before you plan your year around either. The course sequence itself is on AGACNP clinical courses.

For the other tracks, Drexel's public pages give no Gap Analysis outcomes, so plan from the full figures below and treat any reduction as confirmed only once you have it from Drexel.

The Emergency/Trauma NP certificate builds prior credit into its own wording. It admits board-certified FNPs, and its catalog entry describes a 15.0-credit requirement that depends on credit for earlier nurse practitioner coursework, even though the listed courses total 25.0. Ask how that credit is set for you; the track is covered on the Emergency NP certificate page.

Whatever the analysis finds, the three Ps come before any clinical course. Drexel requires certificate students to transfer in master's-level advanced pathophysiology or advanced physiology, advanced pharmacology and advanced physical assessment; anything not transferred “must be taken at Drexel prior to the first clinical course.” For AGACNP applicants who aren't practicing NPs, those courses can be no more than five years old.

Each certificate's clinical courses and On-Campus Intensives are the same as in the matching MSN. In the quarter catalog, NUPR 520, the NP clinical orientation seminar, comes before every NP clinical sequence. A shorter plan still runs through Drexel's contracting and compliance steps, so leave room for background checks, immunizations and your site's agreement even if you have fewer hours to complete.

Every NP certificate lists Fall 2027 as its next start, with applications due July 1, 2027. New certificate students therefore begin on the semester curriculum: the four NURS 6000-series foundation courses, then four clinical courses numbered, for example, from NURS 7500 for AGACNP or from NURS 7510 for PMHNP. The 2027–28 catalog doesn't publish hours per semester course; the AGPCNP certificate text, still stating 640, is the exception. Drexel's semester conversion lists the new numbers by track.

Settle these when you apply:

• Which courses and how many clinical hours your analysis removes, course by course.
• Whether the result is final or reviewed again before clinicals.
• How your earlier NP clinical hours should be documented.
• Which pharmacology course you must take at Drexel.

Fewer hours don't make preceptors easier to find. Your new population still needs clinicians Drexel accepts: NPs, certified nurse midwives or physicians from approved specialties, each board certified and at least a year into practice. For a certified NP that usually means stepping outside a familiar setting. Acute care training happens on medical, surgical and critical care services, and a psychiatric certificate needs psychiatric preceptors.

Some track rules apply regardless of the analysis. The AGPCNP certificate keeps its hours in the state where you live or in Pennsylvania, and asks for a Pennsylvania RN license too. If you hope to train where you already work, check with your track director first; Drexel's public pages don't address employer sites. And because your hours may differ from the standard course, give every preceptor the exact figure Drexel assigned you.
