Drexel DNP practicum hours and the 1,000-hour rule

The DNP rule is cumulative. Drexel's catalog sets the degree floor at 1,000 precepted hours earned after the baccalaureate, and hours from your master's program count once your previous school verifies them. Only precepted hours your former school can verify help here, so gather the details of your master's clinicals before you apply.

That makes your verified prior hours the biggest single factor in how much practicum you do at Drexel. Under the quarter catalog you need at least 400 verified graduate precepted hours to be considered, and the number you verify places you in Category 1 or Category 2.

Every DNP student completes 200 practicum hours inside the required core courses. Category 2 students add NUPR 781 Advanced Clinical Practice Specialization, and the two scholarly project seminars carry the rest.

One sample plan shows 160 hours for NUPR 805 rather than 40, but only 40 makes the catalog's 480 and 600 totals add up. NUPR 788 carries variable credit and is taken when needed, with the director's approval. If your plan shows different numbers, confirm them with the DNP program.

Prior hours count only once they are documented. Drexel's DNP application asks for the Verification of Post-Baccalaureate Precepted Clinical Hours form, which the catalog calls the Clinical Hours Verification Form (CHVF), completed by the school where you earned the hours, together with a Track Request Form.

Request it early. Your previous program has to look up and certify your hours, and the result decides your category and therefore whether NUPR 781 is in your plan. The copy on Drexel Online is dated 2022, so download the current version from the program page when you apply.

You also apply to a practice track. Nationally certified APRNs go into the Advanced Clinical Expert track, while the Nurse Executive/Leadership Expert track takes applicants who hold certification or bring 400 or more graduate precepted hours.

The DNP's next start is Fall 2027, so new students enter the semester version in the 2027–28 catalog. It sorts students into three pathways, with thresholds that differ from the quarter categories.

• Pathway A, at least 640 prior precepted hours: additional practicum hours are not required.
• Pathway B, 500 to 639 hours: adds NURS 8005 Advanced Clinical Specialization.
• Pathway C, fewer than 500 hours: adds NURS 8005 and NURS 8006 DNP Practicum for Professional Role Development, a variable-credit course that can be repeated.

The semester catalog states no hours for these courses, and its 640 and 500 cutoffs replace the quarter catalog's 620 and 400. If your verified total sits between those numbers, the change can move you to a different plan, so ask the DNP program which thresholds apply to your admission. Practicum-intensive courses need a doctorate-prepared Practicum Mentor, who can come from inside or outside your practice setting. Drexel's DNP page says a mentor will need to be assigned without saying who does the assigning, so ask the program early whether you propose a mentor or Drexel matches you with one.

Drexel strongly encourages practicum experiences beyond your own workplace, even though the DNP project itself may be rooted in the place you already work. That can mean finding a second setting led by someone with a doctorate. The whole program is described on the post-master's DNP page.

Residency limits differ from the NP programs. Residents of Alabama, Colorado and Louisiana, along with Missouri, Nebraska, both Dakotas and Wyoming, cannot enroll in the DNP, while Kansas, Minnesota and Oregon are closed to NP programs but open to the DNP. Washington's commission, which approves Drexel practice experiences for listed MSN NP tracks, leaves the DNP off that list. A move to another state partway through can also affect whether you can finish clinical requirements, so raise it with your advisor first, and check Drexel state authorization before choosing a practicum site in another state.
